Vinicius José Piaxão de Oliviera Junior (born 12 July 2000) is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Real Madrid and Brazil national team.
Vinicius was born in São Gonçalo, a city in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro and begun his career with Flamengo where he made his senior debut in 2017 at age 16.
Vinicius Junior’s football career began in the year 2006 when his father took him to Flamengo offices in Mutuà in São Gonçalo where he lived. His club document described him as a left-back.
Between 2007-2010n Vinicius attended futsal classes at Flamengo’s school in São Gonçalo but the young chap had no interest in playing Futsal and opted to play football.
He officially made his debut for Flamengo on 13 May 2017 in a Brazilian Serie A 1-1 draw to Atletico Miniero. Just two days later, his contract was extended and his buy out clause was increased from €30m to€45m.
The contract renewal was reported to be part of a transfer process of Vinicius to Real Madrid, an agreement reached by the two clubs that week with an obligation to sell the winger in July 2018. He registered his first goal for Flamengo on 10 August 2017 in the Copa Sudamericana against Palestino.
Real Madrid on 23 May 2017 reached an agreement to sign Vinicius right after his 18th birthday on 12 July 2018.
He joined the Los Blancos for a reported transfer fee of €46 million which at the time was the most expensive sale of a Brazilian player in the history of Brazilian football just behind Neymar.
It was the highest transfer fee ever paid for a Brazilian teenager at the age of 19. He was scheduled to return to Brazil on loan.
But on 20 July 2018, Madrid officially unveiled Vinicius as their player and he made his debut on 29 September 2018 coming on as a substitute in the 87th minute in a La Liga game against Atletico Madrid.
He scored his first goal on 10 November 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute in a game against Real Valladolid. He immediately settled as a first team player for Real Madrid and scored the first goal in the 2-0 El-Classico victory over Barcelona on 10 October 2020.
He made 29 appearances during the season and contributed to three goals as Real Madrid won the 2019-20 La Liga title.
Junior Vinicius has enjoyed spells with the Brazilian U15 and U17 teams before going ahead to be called to the senior national team on 28 February 2019 but injury prevented him playing in the friendlies against Panama and Czech Republic.
He won the Brazilian U15 Championship and finished the tournament as the second highest topscorer with 6 goals.
He finally made his senior career debut on 10 September 2019 as a 72nd minute substitute in a game Brazil lost 1-0 to Peru.
