The 2021 budget of Ghana read by Majority leader, Hon. Osei-Kei Bonsu in place of Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta Minister of Finance stipulates energy  sector, COVID-19 Health Recovery,financial sector, sanitation and pollution levies,etc., The energy sector Recovery of 20 pesewas per litre of petrol/diesel and 18 pesewas per kg on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and a Sanitation and Pollution Levy of GHS10 pesewas per litre of petrol and diesel have taken effect today Saturday May 1,2021

Parliament have enacted laws to buttress the imposition of these new taxes, that is These are the Penalty and Interest Waiver Act, 2021 (Act 1065), COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy Act, 2021 (Act 1068), Financial Sector Recovery Levy Act, 2021 (Act 1067), Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2021 (Act 1064) and the Income Tax (Amendment) Act, 2021 (Act 1066).

The COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy Act “imposes a one percent levy on the supply of goods and services made in the country, other than exempt goods or services and the import of goods and services, other than exempt imports”.

According to sources,Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) General Secretary, Godfred Abulbire Adogma says the Union would decide on the transport fares increase in the course of the week and announce after Wednesday to implement immediately across the country. He added that the increase will not exceed 20%. He hinted of inevitable increase of the fares since the situation demands so.
