Until this new variant New Zealand had lived without the threat of COVID-19 for some months now as the country had less than 3000 reported cases with only 46 deaths.

The Prime Minister Jacinda has linked the new variant from the neighbouring Australia that had been suffering from the new variant for some time now.

“Our case has originated in Australia,” Ardern said. “And now the job we have is to work through how and when it got here.”

“We are one of the last countries in the world to have the Delta variant in our community,” Ardern said. “We’re in the position to learn from experience overseas, and what actions work, and what actions don’t work.”

“Delta has been called a gamechanger — and it is. It means we need to again go hard and early to stop the spread. We have seen what can happen elsewhere if we fail to get on top of it. We only get one chance.
