About 109 people were arrested in Beira City for violating the state of emergency. This includes sex workers, sellers, and people who drink alcohol on public streets.

According to Fernando Ribeiro, director of the provincial police command, around 77 sex workers arrested were women, 43 of whom were foreigners.

Some alcohol sellers are children, he added.

Mozambique has recorded 227 positive cases of Covid-19, 12 of which are in the province of Sofala.

President Philippe Nyusi extended the state of emergency announced on April 1 for a month and referred to a growing number of cases.

As long as emergency traffic in the country is restricted, schools are closed and foreigners are not permitted into the country.
