Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has become England U21 all-time top goalscorer after his strike against Turkey on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old England forward netted in the 88th minute of the European Championship U21 qualifier at the Molineux Stadium giving England a two-goal lead with Turkey finding the net late with a consolation goal.
The goals was his fourteenth (14) for the Young Lions as he surpassed the record he already held alongside Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers.
In a post match interview about his achievement Nketiah said: “It’s amazing. To beat the record and to be alongside those kind of names and players is a dream come true and proud moment for me and my family.”
The Young Lions have booked their place in the group stages of next year’s U21 European Championship which will be co-hosted by Hungary and Slovenia.
Ahead of the match, England’s U21 head coach, Aidy Boothroyd anticipated big things for the Arsenal striker now and in the future saying he has an “aura of responsibility and leadership.”
“There’s no doubts about it, he’s destined for big things,” Boothroyd said. “His personality and persona around the lads, he has an aura of responsibility and leadership about him.
“He’s a natural, all the players like and respect him. We know what he gives on the pitch but he’s good off the pitch. This is what we want our young England players to look like.
“How far can he go? He would have to play regular games for his club.”
Eddie has been a hardworking sttacker and has found favour at Arsenal with Mikel Arteta handing him enough game time.
He scored twice in the Premier League last season after returning from loan at Leeds United making 13 appearances for the Gunners.
