The President of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, has expressed the displeasure AU on the death of a black American, George Floyd, at the hands of police in the United States.
The AUC Chair issued a development statement on Friday expressing his strong condemnation of violence, denial of discrimination, and reinforcing Washington’s call to action.
He said the United States must step up efforts to eliminate forms of ethnic and racial discrimination. He said the AU rejects the ongoing discriminatory practices against US black citizens.
George Floyd, 46, died in police custody earlier this week. The incident blew up the #BlackLivesMatter movement, especially after recording a viral video of a white police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck when he repeatedly said he could not breathe.
A number of violent demonstrations took place throughout the country. President Trump has warned that looting will not be handled and that the National Guard may be stationed in Minneapolis. The police in question have now been arrested and charged.
