The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi has appointed the first female Vice-Chancellor in the university’s history.

A press release from the office of the public relations office of the Ghanaian university has indicated that Professor Mrs. Rita Dickson has been appointed to serve a four-year term.

This follows the expiry of the mandate of the current Vice-Chancellor Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso whose mandate ends in August 2020.

Professor Dickson who was formerly a Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university will begin his tenure on August 1 2020.

The University Council made the decision for her appointment at its 258th meeting held on Thursday, June 25, 2020 after accepting the report of the Vice-Chancellor search committee formed to find a replacement for the outgoing Vice-Chancellor Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso.

Before her appointment, Professor Dickson was the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, a role she was appointed to in September 2018. She was a professor of Pharmacognosy at the same institution. She is also a researcher who researched in fields like Bioactive Natural Products, Phytochemistry and Quality Control of Phytomedicines.

The university was recently ranked as the best in West Africa and the 14th best in Africa by the US News and World Report.
