Manchester United lost the Europa Cup final to Villarreal on Wednesday night and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told his squad that ‘we need to get better’.
United were in control of the game for the most minutes but a 29th minute set piece by Dani Parejo was guided inside the right post by Gerard Moreno making it 1-0 before half-time.
Edinson Cavani brought United back into the game as he rifled one back low into the middle of the post from a rebound.
The game was sent to extra time and then to a dramatic penalty shootouts with David De Dea missing the last and handing Villarreal the win.
Ole told BT Sports: “We need to get better, simple as. We’ve done really well this season, losing three of the first six games. We pushed in the league and got closer to the top than we thought at that point. And we got to the final but you need to win these finals to make it a good season.
“We, who are here now, need to do better, work better, harder, clever. But two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad altogether is important for us to go even further. I’m sure our challengers will also want to improve, so we’ll improve as much as we can.”
