Football clubs are one of the hardest-hit businesses as football events were halted all over the world and revenue streams cut short as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. The football fraternity has been contributing their quota to the fight of the pandemic through donations.

Internally, some clubs have asked their players to take pay cuts while others volunteered to take pay cuts. Mesut Ozil has come under fire for his refusal to take pay cuts after Arsenal asked to slash salaries of its players. Ozil is believed to be one of the three players who have refused the offer.

Arsenal is offering to slash salaries of players by 12.5% in order to cushion the club’s finances during the Coronavirus crisis. Ozil will accept a pay cut but only after there is a clearer picture of the economic fallouts of the pandemic on the club.

As part of the agreement with players, Arsenal promised the players huge bonuses if the club qualifies for the Champions League next season. Players who will be sold for profits will also be eligible for a refund when the crisis is over.

Ozil’s pay cut refusal didn’t go down well with English TV personality, Piers Morgan who blasted the former World Cup winner accusing him of taking £350,000 a week for playing nothing.

In a reply to a football journalist who reported the news in a tweet, Piers said, “Disgraceful, but no surprise – Ozil’s been getting £350k-a-week for doing nothing since 2017.”

“Some of the younger players, who are on far less money than you, are taking a 12.5 percent pay cut, a minuscule drop in the ocean for you, and you don’t want to do it because you want to see how the financial situation plays out while you are sitting on your backside on your Playstation every night rather than actually playing football,” Piers continued today on his good morning Britain show.
