Former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection under the erstwhile John Mahama administration, Lawyer Nana Oye Lithur has lashed out at the Akuffo-Addo Addo government over the rise of rape cases under his tenure.
Speaking on Accra-based Class FM, the former minister said the Akuffo-Addo led administration is doing little to address the issue. She said their lukewarm attitude towards addressing the issue is the reason for the ridiculous rise in sexual abuse cases in the country.
“Rape is a big, big issue under the current NPP government…We have an increase in rape cases,” Nana Oye Lithur said.
“NPP government is not providing resources to address issues relating to rape, so, there’s also insecurity for women,” she continued.
Reacting to the death of the 90-year-old Kafaba woman, Nana Oye Lithur said her administration started a program to close witch camps in the north of the country. He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) abandoned the program upon resuming office in 2017.
“We’re talking about the lynching of a 90-year-old woman a few weeks ago; may she rest in perfect peace. Under NDC, under John Dramani Mahama, we started a programme to shut down witch camps and to provide support for women who had been accused of being witches and even to eradicate that customary practice,” she told Class FM.
“How do you politicise crime when you are introducing an intervention to address a custom, which adversely violates the rights of women? And because of the neglect of NPP and their failure to continue a well-spelled out programme to eradicate accusation of women as witches, it has led to lynching.”
