Aston Villa has shockingly signed Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley on a season-long loan deal on Wednesday morning.
Barkley featured 31 times for the Blues in all competitions last season but with the arrival of £89m Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech in midfield this summer, Lampard has allowed Barkley to move to the Vills Park on loan.
The 26-year-old has featured twice in the Premier League this season for Chelsea coming from the bench in both games seemingly a surplus to requirements at the Stamford Bridge and will now join Dean Smith and former Blues legend and assistant manager John Terry’s side at Villa Park for the 2020-21 season.
“Capturing a player of Ross’s quality is a real coup for our club and I am certain he will thrive here and improve our team,” Dean Smith said.
Jack Grealish who captains Aston Villa responded on social media with five heart emojis as his England national teammate joins him at Villa Park.
Barkley was only handed a start this season when Chelsea faced of Barnsley in a 6-0 thriller in the Carabao Cup third-round last week where he scored a goal.
He was however left on the bench as an unused substitute on Tuesday night when Chelsea faced Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth-round of the Carabao cup losing to Spurs on penalties.
Barkley fell behind the pecking in midfield to likes of Jorginho, Matteo Kovacic, Mason Mount and N’golo Kante at Stamford Bridge and with the addition of Havertz and Ziyech.
Chelsea are also reported to still be in the hunt for West Ham defensive midfielder Declan Rice in this summer window.
The Blues are confident of landing the midfielder as they believe West Ham are desperate for funds and are confident a £40m bid will persuade the Hammers to allow their midfielder to make a switch to the Stamford Bridge.
Since his £15m move from Everton to Chelsea in 2018, Ross Barkley has made 86 appearances scoring 11 goals.
