Western Region in the meantime has one confirmed case of coronavirus and still testing. Coronavirus is invading everywhere in Ghana with Accra and Kumasi having the lion share. As part of the containment of the spread of coronavirus, the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) led by the Western Regional Minister together with the various stakeholders have secured laboratory center purported for coronavirus tests in the western region.
According to the western regional minister and MP for Takoradi, various consultations and inputs on a daily basis were made by various stakeholders to make this a reality. The Advanced Laboratory at the Sekondi-Takoradi Veterinary Service Department has been upgraded and resourced to commence COVID-19 testing as soon as practicable.
He added that “the facility is Biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) which is ideal and effective for laboratory testing involving microbes. A request has been made upon assessment to upgrade the facility, which we’ve gotten some support from benevolence organizations”.
According to Regional Veterinary officer Dr. Simon Gbene, the testing facility is resourced and equally efficient as that of the Noguchi Memorial Institute and any other testing centre earmark for COVID-19.
The regional Minister expresses appreciation to the Veterinary Service Department especially Dr Gbene, the Regional Veterinary Officer for his cooperation and contribution so far as well all other stakeholders who made this possible.
