Thomas Teye Partey (born 13 June 1993 ) is a Ghanaian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League club Arsenal and is the Vice captain of Ghana Black Stars.
Thomas played colts football with youth team Odometah before joining Tema Youth helping them to advance from the second division to the main league in Ghana.
Coming to the attention of an agent named Jose Jiminez, Partey had the chance to play on trails for Atletico Madrid where he seized the opportunity but soon after his trial, the midfielder excelled in their academy.
He signed for Atletico in 2013 going on to win the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup with them in 2018.
Establishing himself as one of the finest midfielders the game has seen, Partey since joining Arsenal on deadline day of the Summer 2020 window for €50m became the most expensive Ghanaian footballer.
Thomas joined Spanish side Atletico Madrid in 2013 after a successful trial with them. He was sent out on loan to Mollorca and Almeria.
Mallorca & Almeria
Thomas was loaned to freshly relegated Mallorca on July 12, 2013 and made his professional debut on August 18 in a 0-4 away defeat to Sabadell. He netted his first professional goal on 15 September in a 2-2 draw against Hercules.
On 24 July 2014, Thomas joined La Liga Almeria on loan. He made his debut in the competition starting in a 1-1 draw against Espanyol. He scored his first La Liga goal in a 3-0 win against Granada on 11 April 2015.
Return to Atletico Madrid
Thomas returned to Atletico Madrid making his first team debut for the club on 28 November 2015 coming on as a substitute to replace Luciano Vieto in a 1-0 home win against Espanyol.
Thomas scored his first goal for Atletico Madrid on 2 January 2016 which was the only goal in their 1-0 win over Levante.
Partey cemented a first team place in Diego Simeone’s team making an appearance in the Champions League final against Real Madrid as a substitute replacing Koke in the 116th minute but Atletico lost on penalties.
His contract was extended to 2022 on February 14, 2017 and he featured in Champions League group stages game against Qarabag at home scoring his first UCL goal in a 1-1 draw.
Following his impressive performances, he was awarded with another contract on 1 March 2018 until 2023, he played in the 2018 Europa League final where his side beat Marseille 3-0 to lift the trophy.
On 5 October 2020, Thomas Partey signed for Premier League club Arsenal on a four-year deal. The Gunners activated his €50m release clause with Atletico Madrid and he will wear the No.18.
Thomas Partey had his first International call up for the Black Stars in May 2016 by manager Avram Grant ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification. He made his debut coming in to replace Frank Acheampong in the final 11 minutes of the game against Mauritius.
He scored his first international hatrick for the Black Stars on 5 September 2015 in a 5-1 victory over Congo in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match.
Partey since then has been a household name in the Black Stars line up having been called up subsequent managers to represent the nation. He was named in Akwesi Appiah’s team for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and has currently had a national call up from new manager C.K Akonor for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualification and 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
