South African Police Minister Bheki Cele attributed the country’s rising crime to a partial increase in alcohol sales.
Cele said he hoped the National Coronavirus Board would discuss the issue and do the right thing. Alcohol violence is a big problem in South Africa.
The country lifted restrictions on alcohol sales on June 1 after level 3 restrictions on the coronavirus were lifted. However, alcohol sales are only permitted from Monday to Thursday between 9:00 and 5:00 local time.
During the blockade, the Police Minister attributed the reduction in crime to a ban on the sale of alcohol. At that time, Mr. Cele said it was better to continue the ban.
On Thursday, he noted several drunken crime incidents and said he needed to rethink some of the restrictions. And he believes that if the ban is reinstated it will reduce the surging crime in not too distant future.
