Timo Werner is a German professional footballer who plays as a for English Premier League side Chelsea and the Germany national team.
Born on 6 March 1996, Werner made his first ever senior career debut in the Bundesliga in 2013 amd became the youngest ever player to represent VfB Stuttgart and later became the club’s youngest ever goalscorer.
The attacker made over 100 appearances for Stuttgart before leaving for RB Leipzig for then club record fee of €10m. Wener became the youngest player to reach 50, 100, 150 and 200 Bundesliga appearances playing across both clubs although the record has now been broken by Bayern Leverkusen youngster Kai Havertz. Timo joined English Premier League side Chelsea in July 2020.
Known for his prolific goalscoring abilities, Werner passed through the ranks of German youth football making a total of 48 appearances across all ranks and finding the net 34 times. He made his senior national team debut for Germany in 2017 and won in the same year the FIFA Confederations Cup sweeping the golden boots of the tournament with three goals. He was also called to represent Germany in the 2018 World Cup.
Werner was born in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg to Gűnther Schuh and Sabine Werner.
Graduating at VfB Stuttgart academy, Werner represented the club at various youth levels. He was promoted to the U-19 team despite being just sixteen years in the 2012/13 season and the striker scored a whopping 24 goals throughout the campaign and was rewarded with the U-17 Gold Fritz Walter Medal in 2013.
He made his senior club career debut in the 2013/14 season for Stuttgart in an Europa League qualification tie against PFC Botev Plovdiv and also became the youngest player ever to represent the club in an offical game at 17 years, four months and 25 days breaking the record held previously by Gerhard Poschner.
He then became also the club’s youngest to play in the Bundesliga and DfB Pokal and later becoming the youngest to ever score a goal in the Bundesliga netting his first goal against Eintracht Frankfurt. He then in November broke another record scoring twice in a 3-1 win against SC Freiburg becoming the youngest player to ever score a brace in the Bundesliga.
Werner agreed a four-year-deal to move to Leipzig on 11 July 2016 for reported club record fee of €10million. He became the youngest player in the Bundesliga to play in 100 Bundesliga games on 26 September 2016 in a fixture against FC Koln at the age of 20years 203 days a record which was previously held by Julian Draxler.
The Striker ended the season with 21 goals becoming the highest German goalscorer in the division and also helped RB Leipzig to qualify for their first ever UEFA Champions League in the club’s history .
He became the youngest ever player to make 150 Bundesliga appearances in a match against his former club surpassing Charly Kőrbel who previously held that record.
In some months later, he helped Leipzig defeat Bayern Munich 2-1 which was the club’s first ever over the Bundesliga giants and went on to finish the 2017/18 season with 13 goals and seven assists.
Werner scored his 50th goal in a 6-0 win over Nürnberg on 7 October 2018, scored his 10th competitive brace against Hertha in the following month and also became the first ever player to score 50 Bundesliga goals for the club in a 3-3 draw against Mainz.
He scored his first Bundesliga hat-trick in a 3–1 away victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach on 30 August 2019 and made his 100th league appearance for the club on 5 October, during a 1–1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. He scored another hat-trick and recorded three assists to guide Leipzig to an 8–0 win over Mainz, their biggest-ever win in the Bundesliga. On 23 November, he became the youngest ever player to reach the milestone of 200 Bundesliga appearances.
He played his final match as a Leipzig player on 27 June 2020 and scored both of his side’s goals in a 2–1 win at Augsburg.
On 18 July 2020, Werner agreed to sign for English Premier League side Chelsea who activated his £47.5Million release clause on a five-year-deal. He joined the club on 1 July 2020.
