Zinedine Zidane has insisted that Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema will not be risked ahead of their Champions League encounter with Atalanta.
Benzema who has scored 17 goals so far this season missed Madrid’s victory over Valladolid on Saturday due to ankle injury adding to the long list of the club’s absentees.
The 33-year-old will undergo a scan on Sunday to see the severity of the injury and Zidane said they will be cautious with the Frenchman with a long season still ahead.
“We are not going to take risks with Benzema because the season is long, if he is fine, he will be with us. If not, he won’t,” Zidane said.
“We are not going to take risks. We never take risks.
“If it was the Champions League final, that is different and we could [take a risk]. If it’s the final game of the Liga season, maybe.
“But there are many games to play, so we won’t take risk. He will have a scan tomorrow [Sunday] and we will see.”
Real Madrid are faced with numerous injuries this season with Eden Hazard, Rodrygo, Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde , Alvaro Odriozola and Eder Militao all unavailable ahead of their Champions League clash with Serie A side Atalanta.
